We had 3 squadrons of F4D & E at Bitburg A.B. W Germ. There were always 12 birds on Victor Alert (WW3) loaded with Mark 28, B43, and B61-1. That's what I worked on. We not only changed the parachutes in these gravity bombs but also their internal nuclear components. US put a shelf life of 5 years on these parts. We also maintained the PAL 1 which when plugged into the bomb would unlock the arming circuit allowing the pilot and WSO to arm the bomb before takeoff. The Phantom is a huge fighter-bomber and I was always in awe working under neath it.The J79 engines were very loud and smokey.
Great photo by the way, sorry about my rambling.
