Brazoria NWR - Mainly Hawks and Geese 122109 : Met Dave Billingsley at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. The weather man said we would have a sunny start to our shoot, but the clouds would begin to roll in in the afternoon. By between 2:30 and 3:00 PM it became apparent that he was the master of the understatement. We ran into a surprise. At least I never thought we would have geese there today. Greater White-fronted and Snow Geese were there in the back pond on the auto-trail. With all the additional birds in the refuge, I guess we should have expected the additional hawk activity. Birds-in-flight opportunities was the order of the day. None of the additional birds were anxious to come close enough for a hi-res portrait.

Camera Test - back from Sony on 12-14-09 : On this dark overcast day with leaf and lawn soaked with rain, the stork came to my front door moments ago. He was delivering my stork back from Laredo Sony Repair Facility. No sun, no flowers, no brightly colored birds, but as Rosanna Rosanna Daba used to say on SNL, "There's[it's] always somethin.'

So here are a few pictures taken in the backyard to see if Sony has me back in the saddle.

Ellington Air Show - Grandson Jacob(8)'s Pics 110109 : This was a day for my 8 year old grandson to become the teacher and his Paw Paw the student. We were parked at the end of Farley St. off Genoa Red Bluff. This at the back of Ellington at the end of the runway. Jacob used my Sony Alpha 350 and a Tamron LD Dii 250mm Zoom. All were shot in Jpeg on aperture priority, AF, and ISO200. His Paw Paw is very proud of him.

Battling the Whites, Red-Oranges & Reds 101709 : Know you all have had problems with good separation of pedals on white, red-orange, red pedals in bright sunlight. Same goes for Great White Egret feathers. On a white surface there can be up to 96% direct of specular reflection that not only messes up the exposure meter, but bounces around and kills the separating tones.

Some of My Favorite Bird Shots of Past Year - Part 1 : Out of the hundreds, no thousands of bird shots I have taken over the past year, from around September 08, there are a few that are my favorites. This is part one of what now will probably turn out to be a two-part series. These were taken with two different camers, my Sony Alpha 350 and my Sony Alpha 900. In most cases I used my Tamron LD-Di 200 - 500 mm zoom. A lot were better in one aspect or another, but for some reason(s), these struck me and I wanted to share them with my friends and family. I hope you enjoy them.

HDRTests in Corel : I used the High Dynamic Range Function in Corel Paint Ulitmate Photo 2X to combine three images each of egrets from the Rookery and some white flowers from my backyard. To each original I lowerered the brightness by 10% two times, and then combined the three images of the egret and the same to the white flowers. Afterwards I took the result of the HDR merge of the three images and used the Corel 'Backlight' function set to 40% and used the Corel Highlight Brightness adjust to lower the highlight brightness in each of the merged images to further improve the textural quality of the white egrets feathers and the white flowers petals. Let me know what you think.
