Took a run to the San Jacinto Monument with Jay Mangum to shoot Northern Shovelers. Only individuals that came close were females. There were a good many ducks and duck species there; Northern Shovelers, Canvas Back, GW and BW Teal, and Ruddy and Ring-necked diving ducks From there we decided to go to Galveston via Hwy 146. As we approached the Seabrook to Kemah Bridge, Jay saw an Osprey posted up on the Seabrook Shipyard side of the road so we stopped at the little bay along Toddville Rd. We say no Osprey feeding in the bay, but we did see a small flock of Red-breasted Mergansers. On to Galveston's West Beach area. Along Stewart Rd. in the fields to the north side of the road we saw and photographed 3 Sandhill Cranes feeding; 2 adults and one juvenile. We saw a large variety of raptors with other birds including Black Crowned Night Heron, Little Blue, Great Blue, a variety of shorebirds. The most productive place was along 8 mile road and Homerighaus Rd. We saw no more Sandies; however, we may have been in the window in between the early morning and and afternoon prime feeding period.
This day I ran a trial shooting about half of the Sandhill Cranes with ISO400 and the other half at ISO50.
