Pigeon Forge/Roaring Creek - Mallards and Canadians 11/09 : The Smokey Mountain's enshrouding clouds dropped down around Pigeon Forge and Roaring Fork, Tennessee. Late in the afternoon the sun shined a few times through only to disappear again. Mallards were plentiful along with a few Canadians. Funny, used to have to go to Seattle for work years ago and up there in the summer I would always see Mallards and Canadian Geese together.

With the low light, ducks in flight shots were hard to come by. Even in the low contrast light, the colors of the trees and the birds were spectacular.

More Backyard Hummers Plus on 090409 : Photographed more Ruby-throated Hummingbirds on the second day of their arrival to our backyard. After the first day, the backyard was divided into two territories, one female and one male. Each protect and maintain dominance over three feeders apiece. The only successful interloper is a female Baltimore Oriole. She spent time fighting with her own reflection in one of the feeders. The long draught has taken its toll on the flowers. All those feeders must me a welcome sight. The neighbors behind have counted up to 23 individuals in their backyard at one time.

Backyard Hummingbird Bonanza Plus 090309 : Had hummingbird feeders up for several weeks. Just got back from sending my Sony Alpha 900 in for service. My wife and I walked through the breezeway to the backyard and there they were. Glad I had a fallback camera. I broke out my folding care blind, got me a cool drink and staked myself out by the feeders. There was a surprise interloper that horned in on the hummingbird feeders - a female Baltimore Oriole I think???

Ducks of San Bernard NWR Winter_08/09 : The winter duck migration season of 08/09 was the first opportunity to photograph wild ducks and mostly it was done at San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge. From the thousands of shot taken, I have reviewed them and selected a little less than one hundred. The criteria was to select those photographs that would, when viewed in total bring to the person looking at this gallery a vicarious experience that would come as close as mine. Two different cameras were used, but the same lens. All shots were saved in camera as JPEG and all post-processing was in Corel. Some of the shots were from 20 to 50 feet, but my, especially the flying shots were over 100 yards. Those taken at the far distances leave only a small amount of pixels to capture there form, small abstract patches of color tones, that still tell the viewer they are seeing ducks. Of course, the ones that are taken at the closer distances reveal a little more detail.

There was a variety of weather conditions, light conditions, time of day. There were clear sunny days, cloudy, overcast, hazy. Some species came to stay for awhile. Others came and left after only a short while. Some of the species had familiar names, others strange, Most I had only seen in books. For the most part, it was a new experience even though I had worked with and been acquainted with duck hunters all my life.

Can hardly wait for the migration to start for 09/10. I just hope that there will be some water. The last time I was there a month ago, there was absolutely no water.
